About the role#
This externship program offers 3rd and 4th year veterinary students hands-on experience in a clinic environment. You will work directly with patients and engage with pet parents under the guidance of our doctors and veterinary team. This program is designed to help you sharpen your skills and explore clinical interests while working toward your degree.
What you'll do#
- Interact with pet parents.
- Observe the development, creation, and presentation of treatment plans.
- Review medical records and take patient histories.
- Perform physical exams.
- Assist the treatment team with administering medications, SQ fluids, and IV fluids.
- Place urinary catheters in male dogs.
- Draw blood on stable animals from Cephalic and Saphenous veins.
- Assist with using ultrasound to identify anatomy.
- Scrub in and assist during procedures.
- Observe sample preparation for reference laboratory testing.
- Prepare and review ear cytology and blood smear samples.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in the 3rd or 4th year of an AVMA-accredited DVM program.
- An open mind, willingness to learn, and a collaborative spirit.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills and a commitment to confidentiality.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Capability to perform physical tasks such as bending, crouching, squatting, and carrying equipment.
- Proof of medical insurance, rabies vaccine or titer, tetanus vaccine, and a recent TB test.
