About the role#
The DVM Student Externship offers 3rd and 4th year veterinary students hands-on experience in a clinic environment. You will work alongside our medical team to gain exposure to urgent care cases and routine wellness scenarios. This program provides mentorship as you sharpen your clinical skills and explore your interests in veterinary medicine.
What you'll do#
- Interact with pet parents and review medical records.
- Take patient histories and perform physical exams.
- Observe the development, creation, and presentation of treatment plans.
- Assist the treatment team with administering medications, SQ fluids, and IV fluids.
- Place urinary catheters in male dogs and draw blood from Cephalic and Saphenous veins on stable animals.
- Use ultrasound to identify anatomy.
- Scrub in and assist in procedures under full supervision.
- Prepare and review ear cytology and blood smear samples.
- Observe sample preparation for reference laboratory testing.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in the 3rd or 4th year of an AVMA-accredited DVM program.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit.
- Commitment to upholding confidentiality standards.
- Capability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as bending, crouching, squatting, and carrying equipment.
- Proof of medical insurance, rabies vaccine or titer, tetanus vaccine, and a recent TB test.

- Term: Rolling applications accepted year-round.
- Duration: Two to three weeks.
- Note: This is an unpaid externship for credit. You are responsible for your own housing and transportation.
