About the role#
This externship program offers 3rd and 4th year veterinary students hands-on experience in a clinic environment. You will work directly with patients, assist with procedures, and observe surgeries. You will gain exposure to urgent care cases and routine wellness scenarios under the guidance of our doctors and veterinary team.
What you'll do#
- Interact with pet parents.
- Review medical records and take patient histories.
- Perform physical exams.
- Observe the development, creation, and presentation of treatment plans and estimates.
- Assist the treatment team with administering medications, SQ fluids, and IV fluids.
- Place urinary catheters in male dogs.
- Draw blood on stable animals from Cephalic and Saphenous veins.
- Assist with ultrasound use to identify anatomy.
- Scrub in and assist during procedures.
- Prepare and review ear cytology and blood smear samples.
- Observe sample preparation for reference laboratory testing.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in the 3rd or 4th year of an AVMA-accredited DVM program.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective communication skills and a collaborative spirit.
- An open mind and a willingness to learn.
- Ability to uphold confidentiality standards.
- Capability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Physical ability to bend, crouch, squat, and carry equipment.
- Proof of medical insurance, rabies vaccine or titer, tetanus vaccine, and a recent TB test.
Location & details#
- Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Commitment: Minimum of two weeks, up to three weeks.
- Schedule: Based on school requirements and includes standard clinic operating hours. Weekend hours may be required.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid externship for credit.
