About the role#
The Library Operations Assistant supports the daily activities of the American University Library. This role focuses on front-facing service and helps ensure the facility runs smoothly for students and visitors. You will work as part of a team to maintain library spaces and assist patrons with their needs.
What you'll do#
- Staff service desks and answer multi-line phone systems.
- Provide directions and information to visitors regarding the library and campus.
- Patrol the building to ensure policy compliance and manage the lost and found.
- Perform basic troubleshooting for minor technological issues on PCs and Macs.
- Record patron data and statistics.
- Maintain the presentability of library spaces and stock supplies.
- Communicate building issues, housekeeping needs, and patron concerns to supervisors.
- Use software tools including Microsoft Office, Springshare products, and library systems like Alma and ILLiad.
- Assist other library departments and contribute to assigned projects.
What you'll need#
- Must be an active full-time student at American University.
- Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to lift 40 pounds and push carts.
- A high level of honesty, integrity, and confidentiality.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing workflows.
Location & details#
- This is an on-site position located in Washington, DC.
- You must commit to a minimum of 12 hours per week with at least 16 hours of total availability.
- The schedule requires one weekend shift, plus at least one opening shift and one closing shift.
- Availability through finals week is expected.
- Pay is $18.40 per hour.
