When should I apply for summer 2027 data science internships?

Summer 2027 roles were already open when this guide was written. Intern Insider shows an apply-by date on each listing linked here, from Nov 2, 2026 through Mar 19, 2027. That date sits on the listing page and is not an employer deadline, so read the posting again on the day you apply. About a third of internship postings are already gone by the time their own stated deadline arrives.

How is a data science internship different from a data analyst internship?

Analyst work centers on SQL, dashboards, and a defined business question. The data science listings in this guide add a model or an experiment, such as a predictive model, causal inference, or an A/B test. Titles are unreliable. One Applied Materials listing titled Data Science Intern is a reporting role, and the Data Scientist Intern on the same employer asks for statistical and machine learning models.

How is a data science internship different from a machine learning engineering internship?

Machine learning engineering listings ask you to train a model and ship it in a product. Adobe's machine learning engineer intern and Stripe's machine learning engineer intern in Toronto are that kind of seat. Data science listings in this guide more often stop at the model, the metric, and the decision, even when they also name Python libraries.

Do I need a master's degree for a data science internship?

Not for every listing. DraftKings, Marvell, Dow Jones, Duolingo, Meta, TikTok, and the CVS bachelor's listing take students in a bachelor's program. Lyft, Databricks, The Hartford, Spectrum in Sandy Springs, the Applied Materials data scientist listing, Bayer, and Google ask for a master's or PhD in progress. GE Aerospace also accepts an associate's degree in progress.

Are data science internships paid?

Every listing linked in this guide is marked paid. Some state a figure and some do not. The CVS bachelor's listing states 42 US dollars per hour. Marvell states 29 to 57 US dollars per hour. ICE states 35 US dollars per hour. Lyft in Toronto states 45 to 48 Canadian dollars per hour. GE Aerospace starts at 24 US dollars per hour.

Data Science Internships: A 2027 Guide

Data science internships on Intern Insider already include summer 2027 seats in modeling, statistics, and experiments. When this guide was written, the data science field page listed 2,511 open internships for data science students from 1,029 companies, and 457 of them were added this week.

That page is the wider set: internships open to data science students, including roles that are not titled data scientist. The data science and analytics roles page groups jobs by the work. It listed 1,619 open internships from 698 companies, and 366 were added this week. Counts below are as listed on Intern Insider when this guide was written. Postings change quickly, so the posting you apply through is the final word on its own terms.

Data science internships open now#

The United States field page listed 2,336 open internships from 952 companies, with 421 added this week. The Canada field page listed 165 from 100 companies, with 33 added this week. On the roles hub, the United States roles page listed 1,411 from 624 companies, with 301 added this week, and the Canada roles page listed 189 from 89 companies, with 58 added this week.

New York listed 162 open internships for data science students from 96 companies, and Toronto listed 55 from 36. On the roles hub, New York listed 109 from 68 companies, San Francisco 56 from 31, Toronto 62 from 32, and Chicago 45 from 26.

The Summer 2027 page listed 19,693 open internships from 2,782 companies, every field, not data science alone. The Winter 2027 page listed 5,691 from 1,443 companies. Most listings below are Summer 2027, about 10 to 12 weeks, with starts in May or June 2027. Bombardier and GE Aerospace are winter. Micron, Duolingo, and Walmart are rolling. Databricks does not name a season.

What the work is#

A data science internship, in the listings below, asks you to turn a question into a model or an experiment. Task lines name predictive models, causal inference, and A/B tests, plus a presentation at the end of the term.

The title is a weak signal. At Applied Materials, the Data Science Intern in Santa Clara is a Summer 2027 reporting seat: metrics, SQL, Python, and Tableau, for a bachelor's or master's student. The Data Scientist Intern on the supply chain team, same city and term, asks for statistical and machine learning models, a master's in progress, and prefers a 3.0 grade point average (GPA).

Analyst work centers on the report: SQL, a dashboard, and one business question. CVS Health asks for predictive models and A/B tests. Lyft in San Francisco asks for live traffic experiments. TikTok asks for causal inference and A/B tests.

Machine learning engineering is the shipping job. Adobe's machine learning engineer intern builds recommendation and search models and asks for Python plus PyTorch or TensorFlow. Stripe's machine learning engineer intern in Toronto asks you to train and launch models, including fraud detection. Both are paid Summer 2027 internships for students still enrolled. Stripe asks you to return to the degree and does not sponsor. Those seats want the model in the product. A data science seat usually stops at the model, the metric, and the decision.

Listings in this guide come from consumer technology (TikTok, Lyft, Duolingo, Meta, Databricks), semiconductors (Micron, Marvell, Applied Materials), health and insurance (CVS, The Hartford, Bayer, and a Pfizer summer internship), media and markets (Dow Jones, ICE, DraftKings, Walmart), and aircraft (Bombardier, GE Aerospace).

The Pfizer listing is a 12-week paid on-site internship for a graduate student in a quantitative field. The assignment runs through Atrium.

Lyft in Toronto is that algorithms work for Summer 2027, for a master's or PhD at a Canadian university, at 45 to 48 Canadian dollars per hour. Meta is on-site in Menlo Park or New York for Summer 2027. It wants a bachelor's or master's student who will return to the degree, for product analysis in SQL and Python or R. Databricks is on-site in Mountain View or San Francisco, names no season, and offers no sponsorship. It wants a master's or PhD in progress, SQL, Python, regression, and causal inference.

Micron is rolling, on-site in San Jose or Folsom, for a bachelor's, master's, or PhD student. Spectrum in Sandy Springs is 11 weeks on-site, May 26 to Aug 6, 2027, for a master's student with a 3.0 GPA, Python, and SQL, and it does not offer future sponsorship. Walmart is rolling and on-site in Bentonville for an MBA or other graduate student. Python, SQL, statistics, and machine learning repeat across these postings. Duolingo states a 3.5 GPA. GE Aerospace and Spectrum state 3.0. DraftKings, Marvell, TikTok, and Meta do not print one.
