About the role#
The Hartford is offering an 11-week Data Science Summer Internship Program starting in May 2027. This full-time, paid role is designed to prepare you for a career in data science. You will work on machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions for strategic initiatives. The program includes opportunities to present to senior leaders, network within the data science community, and attend professional development events. We provide on-the-job training in insurance, cloud environments, and modeling techniques.
What you'll do#
- Create statistical models, machine learning models, and AI workflows to address business problems.
- Review your work with business partners and team members to ensure deliverables meet expectations.
- Identify and assess new data sources and analytical techniques.
- Build and deploy long-term tools to support business evolution.
- Support the implementation of strategies to reach business objectives.
- Learn about our formal and informal structures, business processes, and data sources.
- Provide economic, qualitative, and statistical support for business decisions.
- Translate data insights, model results, and recommendations into presentations for various partners.
- Document your work to help with team knowledge sharing.
What you'll need#
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.
- Currently pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D. in Data Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Quantitative Economics, Actuarial Science, Computer Science, or a similar field.
- Experience with statistical modeling, inference, and building machine learning algorithms using Python.
- Ability to explain methodologies, visualizations, and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Skill in maintaining project notes, version history, and technical documentation.
- Exposure to cloud-native environments like AWS Sagemaker or GCP Agent Platform is a plus.
- Familiarity with prompt engineering, RAG, agent workflows, and LLM evaluation is a plus.
- Experience with SQL, Unix, and Git is a plus.
Location & details#
- This is a hybrid role. You will work from the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with remote flexibility on Monday and Friday.
- Office locations include Hartford, CT, Charlotte, NC, and Chicago, IL.
