You will perform routine work assignments and problem resolution to support team members.Within defined guidelines and framework, underwrites individual life insurance applicants according to established guidelines for the issuance of Life policies, while meeting the departmental time service standards. Determines whether to accept, modify, or decline a risk through evaluation of an individual's medical history or physical condition, occupational hazards, financial background, insurable interest and other information pertinent to the decision.Our internship program encourages you to showcase your skills, while gaining real-life experience that’ll help you jump-start your career. Interns offered full-time roles may have the opportunity to work out of one of USAA’s satellite locations.What You'll Do: As a Life and Health Underwriting Intern, you will work under direct supervision, adhering to risk and compliance procedures. You will perform routine work assignments and problem resolution to support team members, with a strong emphasis on:Lead continuous process improvement efforts: Stay current with emerging technologies and evaluate business processes to identify and implement improvements.Manage and enhance business processes: Plan and coordinate activities for moderately complex processes, from problem definition and requirements evaluation to design, testing, and implementation. Ensure alignment with the overall experience strategy and vision.Develop and maintain operational effectiveness: Proactively identify opportunities to improve operational effectiveness by implementing and monitoring processes and performance standards. Partner with the Policy Team to create new underwriting policies and procedures.Align business deliverables with needs: Apply foundational knowledge of the business to assist in aligning deliverable processes and capabilities with business needs.Mitigate operational and compliance risks: Identify, own, execute, and enhance controls to mitigate operational and compliance risks within your assigned processes.Monitor process performance: Plan and coordinate the overall health of processes by developing control limits and monitoring key performance indicators.Support communication and reporting: Assist with the development of communication plans for customers and internal stakeholders. Create reporting that clearly demonstrates process performance, identifies trends, and proposes recommendations for enhancements.Facilitate application and process changes: Support the execution of new and modified applications and processes to provide new or improved capabilities, products, or services. Ensure risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.What you need to have:To qualify, you must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university, and plan to graduate after the final day of the internship. Most of our interns participate the summer between their junior and senior years. Our 2027 internship will start on June 2, 2027 and last through August 13, 2027. Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program or higher in fields such as Risk/Insurance, Data Analytics, Data Science, Industrial Engineering, AI/Computer Science, or Nursing. Graduation date cannot be prior to August 13, 2027. Demonstrated interest in the insurance industry, specifically life and health underwriting.Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to organize data and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an emphasis on clarity and professionalism.Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Familiarity with data analysis or visualization tools (e.g., SQL, Tableau) is a plus.Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.Proactive and eager to learn, with a keen interest in process improvement and innovation.Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.Ability to maintain confidentiality.What sets you apart:Graduation date between August 2027 and June 2028Knowledge of Life Insurance ProductsKnowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) model developmentStrong knowledge of medical terminology and current treatment modalitiesSuccessful completion of projects working with multi-functional teamsAbility to learn new technologies, quickly adapt to system changes, and embracing innovation within the Underwriting processA strong academic record with a GPA of 3.0 or higher is preferred.Compensation range:The salary range for this position is: $25 - $33. Interns will receive an intern stipend to assist with expenses.USAA does not provide visa sponsorship for this role.
