About the role#
We are hiring Federal Work Study students to serve as Library Stacks Assistants at Shannon and Clemons Libraries. This is a part-time position for the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 terms. You will work 6 to 10 hours per week. Full training is provided for all responsibilities.
What you'll do#
- Return library materials to the stacks.
- Retrieve used books from the shelves.
- Shift sections of books to create space for new arrivals or special projects.
- Assist patrons with finding books.
- Perform general maintenance tasks like dusting and placing bookends.
- Push heavy book carts and lift books as needed.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a student at the University of Virginia.
- Active Federal Work Study eligibility.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to learn the Library of Congress call number system.
- Ability to work independently and stay self-motivated.
- Physical ability to bend, reach, and tolerate exposure to dust.

- Location: Charlottesville, Virginia.
- Work modality: On-site.
- Compensation: $14.53 per hour.
- Requirements: A resume and cover letter are required for your application. You will also complete a brief attention-to-detail test during the interview.
