About the role#
The Division of Perceptual Studies at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is hiring an undergraduate research assistant. You will support Dr. Marieta Pehlivanova on a project exploring the characteristics and impacts of near-death experiences. This is a part-time position requiring 10 to 20 hours per week.
What you'll do#
- Complete training on near-death experiences and current research protocols.
- Assist with the qualitative coding of participant narratives.
- Help design and create online surveys.
- Complete the UVA Institutional Review Board CITI training in research ethics.
- Support the team in writing protocols for the Institutional Review Board.
What you'll need#
- You must be a current University of Virginia undergraduate student with a federal work-study grant for the 2026-2027 academic year.
- Academic background in the sciences or prior experience with scientific research.
- Knowledge of research methods in psychological or social sciences.
- An interest in the study of consciousness.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe software.
- Strong attention to detail.

- This role is based on-site at the Division of Perceptual Studies office in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia.
- The position runs from August 25, 2026, through May 14, 2027.
- This is a paid position with an hourly wage range of $19.61 to $30.00.
