About the role#
The California Geological Survey is looking for a student assistant to support the Landslide Mapping Unit. You will work with engineering geologists to manage, analyze, and interpret landslide data. This is a part-time, temporary position that offers exposure to regional geologic mapping and data collection. Work is performed in a remote environment, though you must reside in California.
What you'll do#
- Populate the Regional Landslide Database with landslide events and climate data.
- Compile landslide mapping from previously-published geologic maps.
- Digitize geologic features and geolocate landslide event reports.
- Assist with project layout and style file development.
- Contribute to slope stability modeling and machine learning projects.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a college student taking classes during the regular term.
- Minimum enrollment of six-semester units or nine-quarter units for undergraduates.
- A major in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or Civil Engineering.
- Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS), spreadsheets, and databases.
- A basic understanding of geologic concepts including stratigraphy, geomorphology, and structure.
Location & details#
- This position is fully remote, but you must reside and perform all work within the state of California.
- Work hours are flexible between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
- You may work up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during breaks.
- Compensation ranges from $18.27 to $24.04 per hour.
