About the role#
The State Controller's Office is seeking a student assistant to join the Project Management Office (PMO). You will support the California State Payroll System project, which is a multi-year effort to modernize state personnel and payroll systems. This role provides an opportunity to develop professional skills in communication, research, and project management while working under the supervision of an IT Manager.
What you'll do#
- Provide administrative and operational support to the PMO.
- Maintain project plans, logs, trackers, and artifacts, including risk, scope, and schedule documentation.
- Conduct research to gather data, identify trends, and compile findings for leadership.
- Track project progress and facilitate clear communications.
- Gather and analyze data to create status reports, dashboards, and presentations.
- Format official project documentation and contribute to the standardization of PMO tools and templates.
- Support ad hoc initiatives and expand your knowledge of state IT project management practices and governance.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a college student in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration, Finance, or Economics.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 units; graduate students must be enrolled in at least 8 semester units or 12 quarter units.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Organizational and time management skills with the ability to handle deadline-driven assignments.
- Initiative, self-motivation, and the ability to remain flexible.
- Knowledge of public administration principles and experience with purpose-driven writing is preferred.
Location & details#
- This is a hybrid position based in Sacramento, California.
- You must reside in California, and all work must be performed within the state.
- This is a part-time, non-benefited student position.
- Work schedules are flexible between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday, with a maximum of 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours during academic breaks.
- Compensation ranges from $18.00 to $26.00 per hour.
