About the role#
The Department of Biological Sciences is hiring a student assistant to support the herbarium. This position focuses on the preservation, organization, and digitization of botanical specimens. You will work in an office environment and assist with both collection maintenance and volunteer coordination.
What you'll do#
- Mount, label, and organize pressed plant specimens following established protocols.
- Accession new specimens and maintain accurate collection records.
- Digitize materials by photographing specimens and entering data into collection databases.
- Prepare archival supplies, including labels and folders, to support specimen curation.
- Assist with the processing of newly collected botanical specimens.
- Support herbarium volunteers with their daily tasks and activities.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a Sac State student with at least six units for undergraduates or four units for graduate students.
- Major in biology, environmental science, ecology, geography, or a related field.
- Ability to handle fragile scientific specimens with care.
- Precision in performing detailed, repetitive tasks.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to follow written protocols and maintain thorough records.
- Basic computer proficiency and a willingness to learn digitization workflows.
- Ability to work independently after training.
- Prior experience with natural history collections is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Sacramento, California.
- Work modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Flexible hours between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Hours: Up to 20 hours per week during the academic year, with the possibility of up to 40 hours during academic breaks.
- Compensation: $17.00 per hour.
