About the role#
This position offers a learning opportunity for students to work under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer at Caltrans District 5. You will support transportation engineers with design, project delivery, and project development tasks for state highway projects. This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited student role.
What you'll do#
- Assist Design Engineers with the geometric layout of alignments and profiles.
- Model roadway sections and calculate earthwork and structural section quantities.
- Use AutoCAD and Microstation to draft plans, maps, and exhibits.
- Develop cost estimates by identifying bid items, calculating quantities, and researching unit costs.
- Create quantity calculation spreadsheets and unit cost justification data.
- Write reports, technical memos, specifications, and other correspondence.
- Prepare meeting agendas, record meeting notes, and build PowerPoint presentations.
- Research roadway standards, policies, and best practices.
- Assist with field reviews to assess site conditions, take measurements, and capture photographs.
- Participate in project peer reviews and oversight reviews.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment at an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering, Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering, or Construction Management.
- Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units.
- Graduate students must be enrolled in at least four-semester units or six quarter units.
- A minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Ability to maintain minimum unit requirements throughout each term.
- Working knowledge of Civil 3D, AutoCAD, or Microstation is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: San Luis Obispo, California.
- Work Modality: On-site and hybrid options available based on operational needs and supervisor approval.
- Schedule: Flexible hours between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Workload: Up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during academic breaks.
- Compensation: $18.28 to $28.16 per hour.
- Requirements: You must reside in California and perform all work within the state.
