Thales is seeking a Naval Architect student for the Fall 2026 term to support Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy. Working with the engineering team, you will provide technical support for various ships and assets, gaining experience in troubleshooting ship systems and managing technical data packages.
What you'll do#
- Conduct technical investigations into equipment or system malfunctions, including failure analysis and solution development.
- Prepare and review technical documentation and update baseline records.
- Support the validation of technical data packages and conduct physical configuration audits.
- Assist in the preparation and updating of design change documentation, including manufacturing drawings, installation instructions, and test documentation.
- Perform naval architecture tasks such as requirements analysis, material compatibility investigations, and weight and moment assessments.
- Conduct risk and hazard assessments and support the management of lifting appliance certification.
- Assure compliance with hull-related Classification Society, Naval Ship Code, and Polar Code requirements.
- Prepare work scopes for external resources, including original equipment manufacturers and service providers.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor of Engineering program at a Canadian university with a focus in Naval Architecture.
- Senior students are preferred, though junior students will be considered.
- Prior experience preparing technical reports.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to obtain authorization for access to hardware, software, or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and US Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
- Eligibility for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program and ability to obtain a Canadian NATO Secret clearance.
Location & details#
- Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia (Hybrid). Work is primarily based in the Burnside office, with occasional visits to DND facilities and HMC Dockyard.
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Schedule: Full-time (40 hours per week).
- Physical requirements: May involve working in dockyards, onboard ships, and inspecting machinery spaces, which may require bending and twisting. Occasional domestic travel may be required.
