About the role#
This is a full-time internship focused on the thermal safety of battery packs. You will work with the engineering team to model abuse scenarios and evaluate safety risks for next generation battery architectures. This role is based on-site in Palo Alto for the Winter and Spring 2027 term.
What you'll do#
- Perform geometry cleaning and meshing in STAR-CCM+ for new battery pack designs.
- Develop 3D abuse models for various cell form factors.
- Conduct thermal modeling to assess the risk of thermal runaway propagation.
- Run design sensitivity analyses to inform safety decisions.
- Use MATLAB to analyze data and identify trends from modeling and testing results.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Proficiency in at least one simulation tool such as STAR-CCM+, ANSYS, OpenFOAM, or COMSOL.
- Experience with CAD software like CATIA or Solidworks.
- Programming skills in MATLAB or Python.
- Background in thermal modeling, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), heat transfer, and multi-physics simulations.
- Experience with hands-on testing and experimental work.
Location & details#
- Location: Palo Alto, California.
- Term: Winter 2027 through Spring 2027.
- Commitment: Minimum of 12 weeks, full-time (40 hours per week), on-site.
- This position is paid and open to students actively enrolled in an academic program.
