About the role#
The System Test Infrastructure team within Energy Systems Engineering designs and builds test systems and lab electrical infrastructure for energy storage, EV charging, and solar product development. As an intern, you will work with electrical, mechanical, controls, and test engineers to deliver test hardware and facilities. You will support lab and test-stand work from initial schematics and component selection through commissioning, troubleshooting, and documentation.
What you'll do#
- Design electrical schematics, layouts, and drawing packages for test setups and lab infrastructure using AutoCAD or Altium.
- Select electrical components such as panels, breakers, wiring, connectors, DAQs, and instrumentation.
- Maintain documentation including single-line diagrams, panel schedules, cable schedules, and bills of materials.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate electrical and mechanical systems in test environments.
- Define electrical requirements and participate in site walks, design reviews, and project meetings.
- Support the commissioning, troubleshooting, and validation of test setups, including wiring and integration for PLCs, I/O, sensors, and DAQ hardware.
- Produce clear electrical documentation, such as as-builts and setup guides, for lab users, technicians, and engineers.
- Follow lab and electrical safety practices, including PPE, lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures, and high-voltage safety protocols.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a degree in Electrical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Coursework or project experience in electrical design, controls, power systems, or automation.
- Basic understanding of electrical schematics and power distribution.
- Experience with PCB design tools like Altium or CAD software like AutoCAD.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Willingness to work hands-on in an active lab environment.
- Preferred: Experience with industrial automation, high-power or high-voltage systems, electromechanical systems (robotics, Formula SAE, solar car, or test stands), scripting or test software (Python, LabVIEW), and industrial communication protocols (Modbus, EtherNet/IP, CAN).
Location & details#
- Location: Palo Alto, California.
- Terms: Winter, Spring, or Summer 2027.
- Commitment: Full-time (40 hours per week) for a minimum of 12 weeks.
- Modality: On-site.
