About the role#
Sun Life is looking for a co-op student to join the Credit Risk Methodology and Analytics team. This role provides hands-on experience with portfolio credit risk measurement, data management, and model development. You will work alongside investment, risk management, and actuarial teams to support enterprise-wide credit risk monitoring.
What you'll do#
- Support the development and enhancement of Earnings-at-Risk and Capital-at-Risk methodologies for credit-sensitive assets.
- Assist with regular and ad hoc credit risk reporting across asset classes, business groups, and enterprise portfolios.
- Analyze portfolio data and help maintain risk analytics infrastructure and reporting tools.
- Support model validation, stress testing, scenario analysis, and documentation activities.
- Prepare presentations and summaries for risk management, investment teams, and senior leaders.
- Monitor risk limits, investigate exceptions, and track remediation activities.
- Research emerging topics in credit risk, including climate risk, counterparty risk, and regulatory developments.
- Contribute to process automation and data quality improvement initiatives.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Economics, Finance, Business, Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an interest in financial markets and risk management.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly.
- Experience using Excel and familiarity with data analysis tools.
- Curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn new concepts.
- Programming experience in Python, R, SQL, VBA, or similar tools is an asset.
- Coursework or knowledge related to investments, accounting, risk management, statistics, or actuarial science is an asset.
- Exposure to financial risk frameworks, fixed income markets, or data visualization tools like Power BI or Tableau is considered an asset.
