About the role#
POLITICO is looking for a reporting intern to join our team in Sacramento for the summer of 2027. You will cover the state legislative session and the governor. This is a full-time, paid position that offers a behind-the-scenes look at how news is made in the State Capitol. You will work both independently and with our team on breaking news and enterprise stories.
What you'll do#
- Write and produce the daily California Playbook newsletter.
- Handle research, reporting, writing, editing, and aggregating content.
- Cover spot news in and around the State Capitol.
- Contribute to reporting on California policy and politics for in-state and national audiences.
What you'll need#
- A strong interest in California politics and government.
- Foundational reporting and writing skills.
- Excellent news judgment and the ability to work under deadlines.
- An entrepreneurial mindset.
- Previous experience in a newsroom, with at least one professional internship or job preferred.
- Availability to work early mornings or late evenings as required for newsletter production.
- Current enrollment or recent graduation from a degree program in Journalism, Communications, or Political Science.

- This role is based in Sacramento, California.
- The position follows a hybrid work schedule.
- This is a full-time, 40-hour per week commitment for the summer of 2027.
