ATS Performance Testing Engineering Intern

About the role#

The Performance Testing Engineering Intern will join the Grid Technology Engineering & Evaluation (GTEE) organization within Applied Technology Services. This role focuses on energy efficiency testing for residential and commercial HVAC systems and water heating products. You will work alongside senior engineers and technicians to generate critical test data that supports ASHRAE, ACEEE, AHRI, DOE, and CEC standards, contributing to efforts in grid decarbonization and energy usage reduction.

What you'll do#

• Support senior staff with energy efficiency testing across all active test chambers.
• Conduct unit testing and perform detailed data analysis, including liquid flowmeter testing.
• Assist with control and DAS programming.
• Perform literature reviews regarding codes and standards.
• Support the commissioning of control systems and system operations.
• Test residential and commercial HVAC systems up to 15 tons and hot-water distribution systems.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Mechanical Engineering at an accredited university, with plans to continue education during or after the internship.
• A minimum cumulative and major GPA of 3.0.
• Interest in power system equipment testing, power flow modeling, test automation, controls and data acquisition, engineering analytics, power electronics, electric vehicles, and distributed energy resources (DERs).
• EIT or FE certification is desired.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

• Compensation: $24.52 to $35.37 per hour.
