About the role#
The Patient Care Extern position offers nursing students a chance to practice delivering quality care in a hospital setting. You will work under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse to provide both direct and indirect patient care. This is a temporary, part-time role designed to help you gain clinical experience.
What you'll do#
- Provide personal care and emotional support to patients.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living.
- Observe nursing functions, including medication administration and invasive procedures.
- Perform patient care services and treatments as prescribed by a physician.
- Monitor patient conditions and report changes to the nursing team.
- Collect specimens for diagnostic testing.
- Prepare patients for surgery or other procedures.
- Assist with patient transfers and discharges.
- Maintain patient data and records.
- Communicate healthcare needs to providers and staff.
- Answer telephone calls and call lights.
- Maintain unit supplies, equipment, and inventory.
- Perform courier services as requested.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited school of nursing.
- Completion of basic medical/surgical nursing coursework.
- Graduation date within the next 12 months.
- A GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Active CPR Certification.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Previous experience as a nursing assistant is preferred.
