About the role#
The Patient Care Extern position offers nursing students a chance to practice delivering care in a clinical setting. You will work under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse to provide direct and indirect patient care. This is a temporary, part-time role designed to help you gain hands-on experience while completing your nursing education.
What you'll do#
- Observe and assist with direct and indirect patient care.
- Watch Registered Nurses perform tasks like patient education, medication administration, and invasive procedures.
- Help patients with activities of daily living, personal care, and emotional support.
- Perform treatments as prescribed by physicians under RN supervision.
- Monitor patient conditions and report any changes to the care team.
- Collect specimens for diagnostic testing and prepare patients for surgery or other procedures.
- Assist with patient transfers and discharges.
- Maintain patient records and data.
- Communicate health care needs of patients and families to the appropriate providers.
- Answer telephones and call lights.
- Maintain unit supplies, equipment, and inventory.
- Perform courier services as needed.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited school of nursing.
- Completion of basic medical/surgical nursing coursework.
- Graduation date within the next 12 months.
- A GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Current CPR Certification.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- One year of experience in a nursing assistant or similar role is preferred.
