About the role#
Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is seeking a PhD Co-op to join the Neuroscience Data Science and AI team for the Winter 2027 term. This role supports the development of a large single-cell and multi-omics atlas for neuropsychiatry. You will develop computational approaches to understand disease mechanisms, map cell-cell communication, and identify therapeutic targets for neuropsychiatric disorders.
What you'll do#
- Benchmark and apply methods to map cell-cell communication networks in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
- Identify disease-associated disruptions in ligand-receptor interactions and intercellular biological circuits.
- Generate disease-specific cellular interaction maps.
- Apply AI and single-cell analytics to uncover disease-associated cell states and pathways.
- Use machine learning, network biology, and foundation models to identify novel therapeutic targets.
- Integrate single-cell discoveries with orthogonal multi-omics data.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in Data Science, Precision Measures, and Neuropsychiatry Discovery.
- Present findings to scientific leaders and contribute to publications, posters, and presentations.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD in a quantitative discipline such as Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience, Computer Science, or Data Science.
- Strong programming skills in Python and/or R.
- Experience analyzing high-dimensional multimodal biological datasets including single-cell RNASeq, ATACSeq, proteomics, and genomics.
- Familiarity with machine learning, statistics, and computational biology methods.
- Strong scientific communication and presentation skills.
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Experience with graph analytics, network biology, knowledge graphs, or generative AI methods is preferred.
- Familiarity with cell-cell communication modeling tools, pathway analysis, and systems biology is preferred.

- Modality: On-site, full-time (40 hours per week).
- Status: Paid position.
- Eligibility: Must be authorized to work in the US without current or future sponsorship requirements and remain actively enrolled in an academic program throughout the internship.
