    About the role#

    The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six-week program designed to prepare newly arrived refugee youth for success in the New York City public school system. The program serves up to 135 students aged 5–21 from over 20 countries, offering academic, creative arts, physical education, and life skills instruction. The Photography Intern will document the Academy, creating high-quality images for internal and external use, including newsletters, funder reports, and the student yearbook.

    What you'll do#

    • Photograph Academy classes, events, and student and staff portraits.
    • Edit photo rolls and individual images.
    • Organize and deliver images in easy-to-download files, categorized by date and event.
    • Collaborate regularly with the Yearbook Coordinator, Graphic Designer, and IRC administrators.
    • Commit to photographing at least 50% of priority events, including staff training, the first day of school, weekly Wednesday community events, Friday field trips, and graduation.

    What you'll need#

    • At least two years of photography experience.
    • Fluency with photo editing software.
    • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • High level of cultural competence and flexibility.
    • Experience working with diverse populations and youth is desirable.
    • Must be based in the US, be a US citizen or possess US work authorization, and be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution or have graduated within the last two years.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Manhattan, New York.
    • Term: Summer 2026 (June 29 – August 21, 2026).
    • Work Modality: On-site.
    • Schedule: Part-time, Wednesdays and Fridays, 4–15 hours per week.
    • Compensation: This is an unpaid internship.
