About the role#
The Children's Legal Services program in New York provides legal representation to unaccompanied children. This internship offers exposure to immigration processes, trauma-informed legal practices, and New York family court procedures. Interns gain experience in managing client cases and developing intercultural social work skills.
What you'll do#
- Support in building and fostering relationships with young clients by participating in meetings.
- Provide administrative support to the Children's Legal Services team, including tracking court hearings, communicating with clients, and preparing applications or supporting documents.
- Perform research on immigration issues and country conditions.
- Participate in online immigration law trainings and webinars.
- Assist in connecting clients with additional IRC NY programs for resources such as educational support.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an ABA-accredited law school with completion of 1L.
- Demonstrated passion for working with children or low-to-moderate income immigrant populations.
- Motivation, flexibility, and the ability to manage time effectively while working independently or as part of a team.
- Successful completion of the IRC orientation and a full background check.
- Proficiency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
