The ACLU of New Jersey invites rising third-year law students and recent law graduates to apply for a sponsorship opportunity for a public interest legal fellowship. The organization will partner with the selected candidate to develop a project proposal focused on voting rights in New Jersey, with the goal of securing external funding through organizations such as Equal Justice Works, Justice Catalyst, or the Skadden Fellowship Foundation. This role involves close collaboration with legal staff to refine the proposal, ensure appropriate mentorship, and align the project with the organization's strategic priorities.
What you'll do#
- Develop a project proposal centered on voting rights and democratic participation in New Jersey.
- Collaborate with legal staff to refine project strategies and prepare for external funding interviews.
- Work on lawsuits and advocate for clients.
- Engage with political advocacy and communications teams to advance legislation and public education.
- Participate in hearings, meetings, and events throughout New Jersey.
What you'll need#
- A passion for civil rights and civil liberties.
- Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and an understanding of how power manifests across diverse groups and socio-economic circumstances.
- Experience in litigation (such as a clinic or clerkship) or policy advocacy.
- Ability to work independently, manage projects, and collaborate effectively within a team.
- Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to write clearly and accessibly.
Location & details#
- Location: Newark, New Jersey.
- Work Modality: Hybrid (two in-office days per week).
- Term: Starts September 2027.
- Compensation: The ACLU-NJ pays fellows on the same scale as staff attorneys, starting at $77,000 for new law graduates.
