About the role#
This internship focuses on the intersection of quantum algorithms, software, and hardware. You will work with researchers and engineers to develop, implement, and evaluate quantum algorithms for problems in chemistry, materials science, optimization, and quantum machine learning. The role involves using Qiskit and IBM Quantum systems to design experiments, investigate scalability, and improve performance on current quantum processors. You will contribute to research prototypes, technical demonstrations, and scientific publications.
What you'll do#
- Research and implement quantum algorithms for practical scientific and computational problems.
- Develop and optimize quantum circuits using Qiskit and the IBM Quantum software stack.
- Execute experiments on real quantum processors and analyze the results.
- Investigate techniques for improving circuit performance, such as transpilation, error suppression, and error mitigation.
- Benchmark quantum algorithms using classical baselines and simulation methods.
- Analyze the scalability and computational requirements of algorithms to identify bottlenecks.
- Collaborate with researchers and engineers across quantum algorithms, software, and applications.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Ph.D. or Master's degree program in Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, with a research focus on quantum computing.
- Strong understanding of quantum information and quantum algorithms.
- Hands-on experience implementing quantum algorithms using Python and a quantum SDK, preferably Qiskit.
- Experience with numerical computing and scientific programming in Python.
- Ability to formulate technical problems, design experiments, and communicate conclusions independently.
- Experience conducting academic or industrial research, ideally with publications or conference contributions.
- Familiarity with the IBM Quantum platform, Qiskit Runtime, and Qiskit workflows.
- Knowledge of variational quantum algorithms, quantum simulation, quantum chemistry, or quantum machine learning.
- Experience with quantum circuit optimization and error mitigation techniques.
- Familiarity with tensor-network methods, HPC, or hybrid quantum-classical workflows.
- Experience with software engineering practices like Git, testing, and documentation.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship.
- Work is on-site in the United States.
- The program term is rolling.
About IBM

It operates as a public organization with more than 10,001 employees. The corporate headquarters are located in Armonk, New York.
How to get in at IBM
Applying early at IBM gives you a measurable advantage because recruiters review applications as they arrive. Intern Insider sends an instant alert the moment a role matching your target is published, so you can submit your materials before the pile grows. Being among the first candidates seen helps you stand out in a large applicant pool. You can also improve your response rates by reaching out to the recruiters behind the roles directly. Intern Insider surfaces the specific contacts for IBM positions so you can ask about the role or a referral. This direct approach often works better than sending your resume into a queue.
