About the role#
This internship is part of the GEMCO National Industrial electrical group. You will work on projects in the Indianapolis region. You will work alongside project managers, superintendents, and foremen on live industrial power distribution, feeder, and control work. This role provides a view of how code, design, and estimating decisions function in the field.
What you'll do#
- Support active industrial electrical projects including power distribution, switchgear, feeders, branch circuits, controls, and low voltage systems.
- Track gear submittals, requisition materials, and monitor long lead items like switchgear, transformers, and generators.
- Assist the estimating team with takeoffs, purchase order tracking, and pricing for scope changes.
- Maintain panel schedules, circuit documentation, and drawing revisions for the field team.
- Attend coordination and progress meetings to record action items.
- Walk sites with the superintendent and foremen to verify installed work against drawings and support manpower planning.
- Prepare progress, cost, and schedule reports while supporting monthly billing and contract financial tracking.
- Support temporary power planning and site logistics coordination.
- Assist with testing documentation, punch list tracking, and closeout packages.
- Follow GEMCO safety expectations in the office and on every site visit.
What you'll need#
- Working toward a degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Building Construction Management, or a related program. Sophomore standing or above is preferred.
- Ability to work in an office and on active construction sites using required personal protective equipment.
- Coursework or practical exposure to electrical systems and the National Electrical Code.
- Developing skill in reading plans and specifications and comfort with the math behind takeoffs.
- A motivated approach, with the ability to stay organized and follow through on open items.
- A valid driver license and reliable transportation for site visits.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook.
- Prior construction, trade, or field experience is preferred, as is exposure to Procore, Bluebeam, ComputerEase, AutoCAD, or Revit.
Location & details#
- Location: Carmel, Indiana main office, with regular time on active job sites in the Indianapolis region.
- Term: Summer 2027, 10 to 12 weeks at 40 hours per week.
- Compensation: Paid hourly at $22.00 to $25.00.
- Physical demands: Sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Frequent lifting of up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. Requires close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
