About the role#
This internship is based in the Indiana Construction department at GEMCO Constructors. You will work under a Construction Project Manager with a focus on plumbing. Because plumbing work spans the entire lifecycle of a build, you will see the full arc of a project from site utilities and underground work to final fixture installation and turnover.
What you'll do#
- Support active commercial plumbing projects including domestic water, sanitary and storm systems, natural gas, medical gas, and fixtures.
- Track submittals, subcontracts, equipment buyouts, and purchase orders against the project schedule and budget.
- Assist the estimating team with takeoffs and quantity tracking for pipe, fittings, hangers, and insulation.
- Coordinate underground and above ceiling routing with mechanical, electrical, and fire protection trades.
- Walk sites with the foreman during underground, rough in, and trim phases to compare installed work to the drawings.
- Document hydrostatic and pressure testing, inspections, and code requirements.
- Support labor hour tracking, manpower planning, and monthly billing preparation.
- Assist with punch list tracking, fixture startup, and closeout documentation.
- Follow safety expectations in the office and on all job sites.
What you'll need#
- Working toward a degree in Construction Management, Building Construction Management, Construction Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related program.
- Sophomore standing or above is preferred.
- Ability to work in an office and on active sites, including navigating trenches and ladders.
- Comfort wearing required personal protective equipment.
- Practical, organized approach and the ability to communicate with both field craft and office staff.
- Developing skills in blueprint reading, construction document interpretation, and material takeoff.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook.
- Prior construction, trade, or field experience is preferred.
- Exposure to Procore, Bluebeam, ComputerEase, or AutoBid is a plus.
- A valid driver license and reliable transportation are preferred for site visits.
Location & details#
- Location: Carmel, Indiana, with regular time spent on active job sites.
- Term: Summer 2027, 10 to 12 weeks at 40 hours per week.
- Modality: Hybrid.
- Compensation: Paid hourly at $22.00 to $25.00.
