About the role#
The Student Mechanical Project Engineer provides entry-level project and technical support for mechanical construction and maintenance projects. You will work with the Mechanical Program Manager, Project Manager, Project Engineer, and Foreman. This temporary position is intended for a student currently enrolled in a related postsecondary program and is expected to last approximately four months. You will gain practical exposure to operations including piping, HVAC, equipment installation, and fabrication.
What you'll do#
- Assist with mechanical takeoffs using project drawings, specifications, and construction plans.
- Support project staff with quantity tracking, documentation, and material coordination.
- Track mechanical equipment, materials, fabrication activities, RFIs, submittals, and procurement status.
- Help coordinate mechanical scopes of work such as piping, HVAC, and equipment installation.
- Perform field verification and identify discrepancies between project documents and field conditions.
- Compile project quantities and progress data for reporting.
- Prepare daily project reports, submittals, equipment documentation, and O&M manuals.
- Maintain project files, job diaries, and photo or video documentation.
- Draft routine correspondence regarding project activities and field work.
- Document changes in work scope and communicate updates to the project team.
- Assist with health, safety, and environmental compliance reporting.
- Support the project team with monitoring and updating the project schedule.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a related postsecondary program.
- Completion of 2 to 3 years of postsecondary education in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- At least six months of experience in the construction industry or design related to construction is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents like project drawings, specifications, and procedure manuals.
- Valid current state driver’s license and qualification to operate a vehicle under company policy.
- Ability to pass drug, driving, and background screenings.
Location & details#
- This role is based in Fairbanks, Alaska.
- The position is on-site and requires travel to remote project locations for extended periods.
- Work involves periodic time in shops, fabrication areas, and active construction sites.
- You must be able to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
