About the role#
As a Data Science Intern at the BI Design Lab, you will work on research, analytics, and engineering projects. You will combine scientific thinking with practical engineering to turn open-ended questions into structured analyses, experiments, and working prototypes. This role requires you to learn new domains quickly, evaluate technical trade-offs, and communicate findings to cross-functional teams.
What you'll do#
- Translate ambiguous questions into measurable objectives, testable hypotheses, and implementation plans.
- Collect, clean, validate, and explore data from connected products, cloud platforms, and operational systems.
- Analyze structured, unstructured, time-series, telemetry, and sensor data to identify patterns and anomalies.
- Develop reusable scripts, data-processing workflows, simulations, and prototypes.
- Design experiments to compare alternative approaches and quantify trade-offs.
- Explore efficient methods for processing high-volume data, including sampling, compression, and feature extraction.
- Apply statistical, signal-processing, and machine-learning methods.
- Partner with product, software, and engineering teams to develop technical deliverables.
- Test, document, and communicate datasets, code, assumptions, and recommendations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s or master’s program at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or Applied Mathematics.
- Demonstrated experience using Python for data analysis, experimentation, or prototyping.
- Ability to write clear, modular, and testable code.
- Working knowledge of statistics, experimental design, exploratory data analysis, and data visualization.
- Experience analyzing noisy, incomplete, or high-volume real-world data.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Experience with time-series, sensors, telemetry, or streaming data is preferred.
- Familiarity with sampling theory, signal processing, anomaly detection, data compression, or edge computing.
- Experience building data-processing pipelines using Python and SQL.
- Familiarity with software engineering practices like source control, code review, and testing.
- Exposure to cloud environments such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Familiarity with IoT systems, data acquisition, or embedded systems.
