About the role#
We are looking for an Automation and Controls Engineering intern to join our team in Arden, North Carolina. This is a hands-on position focused on supporting PLC and HMI/SCADA activities within a high-volume manufacturing environment. You will work directly with Controls Engineers and Maintenance teams to maintain, troubleshoot, document, and improve industrial automation systems.
What you'll do#
- Assist with PLC programming tasks, including updating tags, implementing simple ladder logic changes, and supporting standardized code structure.
- Support commissioning and validation activities, such as I/O checks and sensor verification, while documenting your test results.
- Help troubleshoot automation equipment by gathering symptoms, checking I/O status, and identifying root causes.
- Assist with basic industrial networking and device communications checks.
- Document system configurations, create troubleshooting notes, and help build training and turnover materials.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support production, reduce downtime, and improve reliability.
- Support continuous improvement projects by gathering data and performing basic analysis.
- Follow all safety rules and EHS requirements while working near energized equipment and production machinery.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program for Mechatronics, Electrical, Electronics, Automation, Robotics, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline.
- Academic or project-based exposure to PLC concepts and logic, including Ladder, Function Block, or Structured Text.
- A basic understanding of sensors, actuators, motors, drives, and control fundamentals.
- Ability to read electrical schematics and follow troubleshooting steps.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite.
- Comfort using a laptop and basic tools for commissioning and troubleshooting in a plant setting.
- Strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to document work and follow standard processes.
- Preferred: Experience with PLCs, HMI/SCADA platforms, industrial communications, basic networking, Python, SQL, C/C++, or hands-on lab experience with robotics and motion control.
