About the role#
This co-op position supports the development and application of long-read sequencing workflows. You will focus on novel haplotype discovery in diverse germplasm. The project aims to identify genetic variation beyond single nucleotide polymorphisms, including structural variants and copy number variants, to understand their contribution to agronomic traits.
What you'll do#
- Support the development and application of long-read sequencing workflows.
- Use PacBio HiFi sequencing and bioinformatics to identify genetic variation like structural variants and copy number variants.
- Develop scalable analytical pipelines at the intersection of computational biology, genomics, and plant breeding.
- Characterize novel haplotypes in diverse germplasm.
- Evaluate strategies for incorporating genetic variation into breeding applications.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Genetics, Plant Science, or a related field.
- Experience with long-read sequencing analysis, such as PacBio or ONT.
- Experience with variant calling including SNPs, indels, SVs, and CNVs.
- Proficiency with command-line interfaces for bioinformatic tools.
- Experience with Python or R.
- Knowledge of population genetics, haplotypes, and genomic diversity.
- Scientific curiosity and strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- A collaborative approach to multidisciplinary research.
