As a Firmware Engineering Intern, you will work on the software layer that interacts directly with hardware in real homes. You will contribute to the low-level code running on batteries and inverters, making millisecond-level decisions that maintain grid stability and protect hardware. This role involves working in the same codebases as full-time engineers, with your code running on physical systems.
What you'll do#
- Design, implement, and test core firmware in C/C++ for bare-metal, RTOS, and embedded Linux systems.
- Develop and debug device drivers, communication interfaces, and low-level system behavior by interpreting schematics and datasheets.
- Build fleet-critical components including telemetry, fault detection, response systems, and grid-balancing control loops.
- Write reliable, deterministic, and safe code while working under real-world physical constraints.
- Collaborate with hardware, power electronics, and software engineers to solve integration challenges.
What you'll need#
- Solid understanding of C/C++, embedded systems concepts, and computer architecture.
- Practical experience with microcontrollers, RTOS, sensor integration, robotics, or power electronics through coursework, projects, or prior internships.
- Interest in physical system behavior, including the use of timing diagrams, interrupts, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
- Ability to communicate clearly and thrive in a collaborative environment.
- A self-directed, curious mindset focused on solving complex problems.
