About the role#
Barr Engineering Co. is seeking a GIS student for a full-time internship in Salt Lake City, Utah. This role supports project teams through spatial data management and cartographic production. You will work on-site with the option for a hybrid arrangement. The internship lasts approximately three months, beginning in winter or summer 2027.
What you'll do#
- Develop clear, accurate maps and figures for project reports and presentations using ArcGIS Pro.
- Perform analyses, georeferencing, and digitizing of raster and vector data using standard Esri ArcGIS extensions.
- Maintain and organize geospatial databases to ensure data integrity.
- Work with ArcGIS Online applications.
- Obtain and process publicly available spatial datasets.
- Review and verify data and cartographic outputs for accuracy.
- Collaborate with project teams and other GIS specialists to deliver results.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in GIS, geography, environmental science, or a related field.
- Completion of at least four GIS courses.
- At least one full-time semester of coursework remaining after the internship.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office.
- Experience with Esri ArcGIS for Desktop 10.x, ArcGIS Pro, and Google Earth.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- A detail-oriented and organized approach to work.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

- Compensation: $22.66 to $25.78 per hour.
- Travel: You may be asked to travel or adjust your schedule to meet project needs.
