About the role#
Barr is seeking a structural engineering intern for the summer of 2027 based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. You will support our structural engineering group on technical assignments related to hydropower facilities, wind turbine foundations, and industrial processing sites. This role involves working with engineers and project managers to gain hands-on experience in a professional consulting environment.
What you'll do#
- Apply engineering principles to assist with calculations and modeling for industrial and energy-related structures.
- Support the preparation of engineering drawings, technical specifications, and design documentation.
- Participate in site visits and inspections to observe construction activities and ensure compliance with design intent.
- Contribute to project reports and help develop cost estimates for engineering solutions.
- Use word processing, spreadsheet, and structural engineering software to support project tasks.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a civil engineering degree program with junior or senior standing.
- Completion of at least two semesters of physics and three semesters of mathematics.
- At least one full-time semester of undergraduate or graduate coursework remaining after the internship.
- Minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0.
- Strong computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheets.
- Current, valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Location & details#
- This position is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and offers a hybrid work arrangement.
- The role involves potential travel and fieldwork of up to 30 percent, which may include rough terrain, moving machinery, and varying outdoor weather conditions.
- You must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and stand, walk, kneel, or crouch for extended periods.
