About the role#
The Nurse Extern in the Academic Med/Surg unit works under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse to develop clinical skills and provide patient care. This role supports the nursing team by assisting with daily patient needs, maintaining safety standards, and contributing to unit workflow. This is a paid, on-site position for the Summer 2027 term.
What you'll do#
- Support patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and mobility assistance.
- Obtain and document routine clinical measurements such as vital signs, intake and output, and weight.
- Maintain a clean, safe patient environment and manage unit supplies.
- Communicate changes in patient condition or behavior to the RN.
- Perform clerical and administrative tasks, including answering phones and updating electronic medical records.
- Assist with patient transport, admissions, and discharges.
- Perform technical skills like 12-lead EKGs or venipuncture under RN supervision after competency validation.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma or GED.
- Active enrollment in a recognized accredited nursing program.
- Completion of foundational nursing coursework, including basic fundamentals of nursing.
- A minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
- A satisfactory reference form from a clinical instructor or preceptor.
- Ability to attend the full orientation week beginning December 14, 2026.
