About the role#
This internship offers practical experience within the ABB Research Department. You will support R&D projects involving electrical, mechanical, and thermal topics, as well as generative AI. You will work on site or in a hybrid capacity to gain knowledge and contribute to ongoing operations. This position requires a commitment to safety and integrity in all tasks.
What you'll do#
- Find and evaluate new technology from public sources.
- Contribute to and critique ideas, features, strategies, and solutions.
- Design, draw, and model new components and test set-ups.
- Design, run, and document simulations, calculations, laboratory tests, and experiments.
- Manage multiple tasks while maintaining high quality standards.
- Collaborate with team members to share information and project updates.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Master's or PhD program in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or Physics.
- Coursework and project experience in electrical machine design, thermal or mechanical modelling, mechatronics prototyping, or AI implementation.
- Ability to think critically and organize tasks effectively.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
- Reliable transportation to the worksite.

- Location: Raleigh, North Carolina.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Employment: Full time, paid position ($20 - $34 per hour).
- Work Modality: On-site and hybrid.
