About the role#
The Digital Production Group at the University of Virginia Library converts rare and unique materials into digital formats. This position is open to students with Federal Work-Study eligibility. You will work in the Shannon Library to photograph books, manuscripts, maps, and photographs. This role includes participation in the Transformational Federal Work-Study Internship program, which provides career support and structured coursework.
What you'll do#
- Photograph rare and circulating library materials.
- Operate professional equipment including Phase One medium format cameras, Cruse scanners, Atiz book scanners, and Epson flatbed scanners.
- Use software such as CaptureOne, Adobe Photoshop, and internal project tracking systems.
- Perform quality assurance on your own work and the work of other team members.
- Handle fragile items with care.
- Complete required internship coursework or the asynchronous workshop series.
What you'll need#
- Current undergraduate status at the University of Virginia.
- Ability to work up to 10 hours per week.
- Interest in photography, library operations, or cultural heritage materials.
- Experience in photography or library work is preferred.
- Ability to handle rare and unique materials safely.
- Submission of a resume and cover letter.

- Location: Charlottesville, Virginia.
- Modality: On-site at Shannon Library.
- Term: Fall 2026 and Winter 2027.
- Pay: $16.71 per hour.
- Schedule: Flexible weekday hours between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
- Note: This position requires a background check.
