About the role#
The Department of Toxic Substances Control is looking for three student assistants to join the Hazardous Waste Management Plan Unit. This team works to implement recommendations from the 2026 Hazardous Waste Management Plan and address data gaps found in the 2023 Hazardous Waste Management Report. You will conduct research and geographic analysis to help protect California communities and the environment.
What you'll do#
- Research and collect data regarding communities located near hazardous waste generators and destination facilities.
- Use systems like HWTS and EnviroStor to obtain and verify facility information.
- Perform geographic analysis of hazardous waste generators and destination facilities to understand their potential impacts.
- Incorporate generator information into geographic reports to address public comments and recommendations.
- Identify and evaluate recurring hazardous waste streams to help focus on consistent waste generation patterns.
What you'll need#
- You must be a college student currently attending classes at an accredited institution.
- Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least four-semester units or six quarter units.
- Your major must be in Data Science or Public Health.
- You need proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- You must be skilled in using calendar management tools and data entry systems.
- You must reside in California and perform all work within the state.
