About the role#
University Enterprises, Inc. is hiring two Engineering Student Assistants to work with the California Department of Transportation in San Luis Obispo. You will work under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer to support design, project delivery, and development tasks for state highway projects. This is a part-time, temporary, and paid position.
What you'll do#
- Use Civil 3D to create geometric layouts of alignments and profiles, model roadway sections, and calculate earthwork and structural quantities.
- Draft plans, maps, and other exhibits using AutoCAD and Microstation.
- Create quantity calculation spreadsheets and compile unit cost justification data for project estimates.
- Join field reviews to assess site conditions, collect measurements, and gather project information.
- Research roadway standards, policies, and engineering guides.
- Assist with administrative tasks, including preparing meeting agendas, taking notes, and developing presentations.
What you'll need#
- You must be a college student attending classes at an accredited university.
- Enrollment in at least six semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduates is required.
- You must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Your major must be Civil Engineering, Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering, or Construction Management.
Location & details#
- The office is located in San Luis Obispo, California.
- Work is performed on-site, with the possibility of a hybrid schedule once you gain experience and receive supervisor approval.
- Field work may be required approximately 10% of the time, involving outdoor conditions and uneven terrain.
- This position follows a rolling term schedule with flexible hours between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Students generally work up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during academic breaks.
