About the role#
As a Data Science Intern at The Mutual Group, you will gain hands-on experience applying analytics to property and casualty insurance business problems. You will work alongside actuarial and data teams to support model monitoring, exploratory analysis, and documentation. This role is designed to help you build a foundation in predictive modeling, insurance concepts, and modern analytics workflows while developing your technical and professional skills.
What you'll do#
- Support exploratory data analysis for pricing, underwriting, claims, or operational analytics.
- Build or enhance repeatable reporting outputs like model monitoring summaries, rating variable distributions, actual-versus-expected analysis, or lift-chart support.
- Help document modeling datasets, feature logic, assumptions, limitations, and data lineage.
- Contribute to code cleanup, reusable functions, testing scripts, and version-controlled project organization.
- Learn foundational insurance concepts such as exposure, premium, claims frequency, claims severity, loss ratio, rate adequacy, and underwriting risk selection.
- Translate analytical findings into business-friendly summaries for actuarial, underwriting, claims, or leadership audiences.
- Shadow team members to understand how model outputs are consumed in pricing, profitability analysis, underwriting workflows, and management reporting.
- Prepare a capstone presentation connecting your technical work to business value.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing an undergraduate (junior/senior) or graduate degree in data science, statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, analytics, economics, or a related field.
- Comfort with at least one programming language, preferably Python or R.
- Basic SQL skills, or the ability and willingness to learn SQL quickly.
- Coursework or project experience involving statistics, regression, machine learning, data visualization, or applied analytics.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Interest in insurance, financial services, risk analytics, or business decision support.
- Strong analytical thinking and quantitative skills.
- Exposure to version control (e.g., Git), data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau), or model monitoring concepts.
- Curiosity, reliability, and a collaborative, feedback-oriented mindset.
Location & details#
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Status: Full-time and paid ($23-$25 per hour).
- Location: Iowa, United States.
- Work Modality: Remote, Hybrid, or On-site. Employees living within 30 miles of the TMG home office are expected to follow a hybrid or in-office schedule. Initial training may require additional in-office days.
