About the role#
Join the Smith+Nephew AI Center of Excellence to explore how data science supports innovation in robotics and medical technology. You will work on proof of concept projects, build rapid prototypes, and help deliver enhancements to our products. This is a full-time, paid internship.
What you'll do#
- Research current artificial intelligence models and explore potential applications.
- Obtain, prepare, and clean training data sets.
- Develop feature encodings and implement machine learning methods.
- Analyze and validate models using statistical techniques.
- Create rapid proofs of concept and prototypes using data.
- Develop interfaces for exploring and using artificial intelligence solutions.
- Work independently while collaborating with colleagues across disciplines and locations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral program in Data Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering field.
- Academic experience using machine learning tools.
- Strong coding skills in Python, R, MATLAB, or a similar language.
- Familiarity with machine learning libraries such as Scikit learn, TensorFlow, NumPy, Pandas, PyTorch, or Keras.
- A strong understanding of data analytics techniques and the ability to implement analytical approaches.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to work independently and contribute to a multidisciplinary team.

- Location: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Term: Summer 2027 (12 weeks).
