About the role#
As a Tool Design Engineer Intern, you will support the S&C Electric Company team in Chicago during the Summer 2027 term. This is a full-time, on-site role where you will help improve manufacturing processes and equipment. You will work directly with the tool shop, operations, and design engineering teams to solve real-world production challenges.
What you'll do#
- Design new tools and fixtures using CAD software.
- Create technical documentation, including drawings and specifications for projects.
- Investigate tooling issues and write clear reports on your findings and conclusions.
- Partner with the operations team to develop instruction bulletins for standard work practices.
- Maintain tool engineering documentation within PLM and ERP systems.
- Provide hands-on support to the tool shop and assist with continuous improvement activities.
- Use engineering theory and calculations to solve design and manufacturing problems.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related degree program.
- Intent to return to school full-time following the internship.
- Proficiency with CAD software, PLM systems, and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to read technical drawings and perform basic bookkeeping tasks.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Comfort working in a production and plant environment.
- Capacity to think analytically and independently to improve existing processes.

- Schedule: Full-time.
- Physical requirements include occasional standing on the production floor, walking throughout the facility, and lifting objects under 50 pounds.
