About the role#
As a Material Engineer Intern, you will work within the Analytical Services lab at our Chicago headquarters. This role focuses on material testing and ensuring conformance to specifications. You will report to the Assistant Manager of Analytical Services and work on multiple projects simultaneously in a team environment.
What you'll do#
- Perform routine analysis on materials including coatings, plastics, and metals used in equipment production.
- Analyze samples from wastewater treatment processes.
- Troubleshoot chemical processes and evaluate potential improvements.
- Prepare samples for optical or scanning electron microscopes and perform examinations.
- Use hardness testing equipment, including Rockwell, Brinell, and Knoop.
- Analyze metal fabrication problems related to materials, tooling, or processes.
- Document testing for process workflow and standardized work.
- Create technical reports and method development procedures for review by leadership.
- Collaborate with product engineers, sales, field service, and suppliers to resolve product issues.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited university degree program, with a concentration in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Must be returning to school full-time at the end of the internship.
- Knowledge of metallurgy, chemistry, and associated processes.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and standard PC skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with basic laboratory techniques and common instrumentation is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Chicago, Illinois.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
- Compensation: $22 to $30 per hour, based on experience.
- This is a full-time, on-site internship.
