About the role#
The Falkirk Mining Company offers an Environmental Intern position at our surface coal mine in Underwood, North Dakota. This role provides students with field and office experience in environmental science, wildlife, or biology. We offer two term options: a 3-month position from May 2027 through August 2027 or an 8-month position from May 2027 through December 2027. This is a full-time, paid, on-site role.
What you'll do#
- Assess and map vegetation on reclaimed wetlands and shelterbelts.
- Monitor wildlife in pre-mine and post-mine areas.
- Compile written and tabular data monitoring reports for state and federal agencies.
- Record levels and sample water from ground and surface monitoring sites.
- Assist the survey crew with fieldwork and office computations.
- Use mine data to produce reports and studies.
- Help employees with soil probing and sample collection.
- Create and modify mine site maps using AutoCAD.
- Escort contractors around the site for noxious weed spraying.
- Perform all duties according to MSHA laws, company safety procedures, and environmental regulations.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited engineering or surveying program with good academic standing.
- Completion of a portion of your college curriculum with the intent to finish the degree.
- A valid driver license.
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
- Knowledge of plant and wildlife identification and taxonomic keys.
- Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
- Ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Record check and a Job Function Test.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, such as steel-toed shoes, hard hats, and respirators.

- Schedule: Rotating shifts, approximately 80% indoor and 20% outdoor work.
