About the role#
This internship provides students with hands-on experience at a surface coal mine. You will support the maintenance team by working on heavy equipment including scrapers, dozers, and haul trucks, as well as smaller diesel engines and light vehicles. This is a full-time paid position available for either a 3-month term from May to August 2027 or an 8-month term from May to December 2027.
What you'll do#
- Perform safety inspections and correct identified issues.
- Carry out mechanical work on heavy equipment and small diesel engines.
- Remove, install, assemble, and disassemble engines and components.
- Complete brake adjustments and repair clutches and wheel bearings.
- Perform general repairs on tractors, trucks, and light vehicles.
- Execute engine tune ups and field work.
- Service, operate, and test large equipment.
- Maintain shop cleanliness.
- Ensure all work complies with MSHA laws, company safety procedures, and environmental regulations.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited diesel mechanic or automotive program.
- Good academic standing with your college or university.
- Completion of a portion of your degree program with the intent to graduate.
- A valid driver license.
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
- Ability to work rotating shifts.
- Steel-toed shoes.

- Work Modality: On-site.
- This position requires the use of personal protective equipment including a hard hat, safety glasses, and a respirator. You must pass a motor vehicle record check and a job function test.
