About the role#
The Nebraska Department of Transportation is seeking a student intern to join the Bridge Division's Hydraulics team. This role provides hands-on design experience under the supervision of a Professional Engineer, focusing on hydrology and hydraulics as they pertain to roadway design.
What you'll do#
- Assist in the design of roadway construction projects, including delineating drainage basins.
- Determine peak flows using rational and NRCS methods.
- Size non-bridge culverts using the FHWA HY-8 culvert analysis program.
- Perform analysis of stormwater treatment and storm sewer design.
- Review and prepare FEMA floodplain maps to assist with certifying project impacts.
- Participate in project meetings and field inspections.
- Document engineering decisions and maintain project correspondence files.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a student (at least three-fourths time) in good standing, majoring in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Preference for second-semester sophomores.
- Experience using Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to work at least 10 hours per week while classes are in session.
- Regular and reliable attendance.

- Location: Lincoln, Nebraska.
- Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Rolling term, minimum 10 hours per week during the semester, with potential for full-time work during school breaks.
