    About the role#

    The Urban Conservation Intern will develop and deliver an urban tree planting, conservation, and restoration program based in New Orleans. This role focuses on avian conservation science and community engagement across urban centers in Southern Louisiana, Southern Mississippi, and the Delta region. You will work primarily in underserved neighborhoods to improve shade quality and reduce heat islands. This is a full-time, paid, on-site position lasting 6 months.

    What you'll do#

    • Lead urban tree planting, conservation, and restoration efforts.
    • Perform hands-on habitat restoration, including planting and maintaining native trees.
    • Engage with volunteers, community organizations, and landowners to provide education on native tree care.
    • Collect ecological data using community science tools like iNaturalist and eBird.
    • Assist with project reporting, budget management, and procurement tasks.
    • Coordinate with contractors and community partners to remove invasive species and thin vegetation.
    • Support outreach by tabling at local community fairs and hosting demonstration workshops.

    What you'll need#

    • Completed college coursework in conservation, forestry, bird biology, natural resources, or related fields.
    • A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
    • Capability to perform sustained outdoor work in varied terrain and weather conditions.
    • Ability to lift and carry at least 30 pounds.
    • Strong time management, communication, and critical thinking skills.
    • Interest in fields such as Biology, Environmental Engineering, Urban Planning, or Agriculture.

    Location & details#

    • Location: New Orleans, Louisiana.
    • Term: Fall 2026 to Winter 2027 (September 21, 2026 - March 20, 2027).
    • Modality: On-site.
    • Schedule: 40 hours per week, typically 8 am to 5 pm with occasional weekend work.
