About the role#
This eight-month co-op provides undergraduate students with hands-on experience at the intersection of software, firmware, and hardware engineering. You will contribute to integrated circuit and custom silicon projects while working with experienced engineers. The role focuses on software that interfaces directly with hardware, including microcode, IP-specific firmware, FPGA, and DSP environments.
What you'll do#
- Develop software with direct interfaces to hardware, including microcode, IP-specific firmware, FPGA, and DSP solutions.
- Design and implement interfaces that abstract low-level hardware functionality.
- Contribute to the development and testing of embedded and firmware solutions.
- Participate in design reviews and code reviews.
- Test and validate product implementations.
- Work with experienced engineers to investigate and solve complex technical problems.
- Collaborate across engineering disciplines.
- Take ownership of assigned technical issues and drive them to resolution.
- Continuously build your knowledge in embedded systems, digital ASIC design, SoC architecture, and firmware development.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate student in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Knowledge of C programming and system software.
- Strong problem-solving skills and an enthusiasm for learning new technical concepts.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- General knowledge of embedded systems, digital ASIC design, and software/firmware development and testing methodologies.
- Experience with C++, Rust, SystemC, Python, or domain-specific language modeling.
- Understanding of processors, servers, and system software architecture.
- Knowledge of SoC architecture, SoC subsystem architecture, IP architecture, or microarchitecture.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines.
- A self-directed approach with a sense of ownership and accountability.
Location & details#
- Term: Winter 2027 (eight-month full-time co-op).
- Location: Remote, must be based in Ontario or British Columbia, Canada.
- Paid position.
- This role is not eligible for immigration sponsorship.
