About the role#
Itron is looking for a Firmware Engineer Intern to join the Product Development team in West Union, South Carolina. You will work on the design, implementation, testing, and maintenance of embedded Linux firmware for electric meters. This role involves collaborating with firmware engineers, test engineers, and technicians on projects related to hardware debugging, test applications, automation, and data analysis. You may also have exposure to AI-related engineering initiatives.
What you'll do#
- Support firmware and software development for energy and utility products.
- Assist with the full project lifecycle, including requirements gathering, coding, code reviews, and documentation.
- Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot firmware components under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Participate in the design, implementation, and validation of firmware solutions.
- Execute test plans, analyze results, and document findings.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify root causes and contribute to solutions.
- Participate in technical discussions and project reviews.
- Maintain clear technical documentation and communicate project status.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering.
- Programming experience with knowledge of object-oriented programming.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated initiative, motivation, and curiosity.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Relevant academic or personal projects.
- Prior internship, co-op, research, or work experience.
- Exposure to embedded systems, testing, automation, or AI-related work.

- Term: Winter 2027, beginning in early January.
- Modality: This is an on-site, full-time position.
